TO MY CHILDREN

kids

Your heartbeat changed the rhythm of my world
the moment it echoed inside my womb.
No other music could be more treasured

after the sweetness of the Eternal Word.
Like an enchantment dispelling all gloom,
your heartbeat changed the rhythm of my world.

What joys, what dreams your little heart unfurled
in my own, swelling to give love more room.
No other music could be more treasured

than life’s harmony playing to be heard
from Nothing to Time beneath Heaven’s Dome.
Your heartbeat changed the rhythm of my world.

My heart beats not for myself alone. Curled
in my arms, sleep peacefully in my bosom.
No other music could be more treasured

than the joint beating of our hearts as we whirled
to a berceuse speaking of love abloom.
Your heartbeat changed the rhythm of my world.
No other music could be more treasured.

  1. I just sighed. That’s lovely – you really capture the intensity of motherhood. So many great lines, but I particlarly liked

What joys, what dreams your little heart unfurled
in my own, swelling to give love more room.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

  2. You spoke the heart of the mother’s love for the children. I specially like the ending couplet with:

Your heartbeat changed the rhythm of my world.
No other music could be more treasured.

  3. What a lovely poem inspired by your family, Imelda. There is nothing like having the ones you love the most close to you. ‘No other music could be more treasured’ I like this alliteration and phrase that you used. A love like family is so precious ๐Ÿ™‚ Another lovely write-up โค

  4. This is such a lovely tribute to motherhood – and perfect timing for me as my youngest, now grown and moved to another continent – has come home to visit this week. The first line of this poem caught my attention and I was so grateful for its repetition. Thank you.

    1. Thank you for reading and for the feedback, LuAnne. My response comes too late but I do wish that you had a lovely time with your kid. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Having just got back from a visit with my daughter and grandson, your Villanelle caused a sharp intake of breath and a tear, Imelda. How beautiful, and I love the skilfully chosen slant rhymes world/treasured. The final stanza made me glow from inside out!
